As a bona fide bourgeois, I occassionally get "Downtown Seattle Elerts" in my e-mail from the ever-vigilant Metropolitan Improvement District, which are intended "to ensure the timely delivery of information related to public safety events in the Downtown area." They're weird and ominous and delivered kind of inconsistently. I've gotten five since the program started in November: one for a Federal Building rally, one for a labor march, one for holiday decorating, one for when the terror alert level went up, and another today.
What's the latest danger facing downtown Sea-Town? Criminal mastermind and obvious terrorist Robert R. Brown:
Here's the text of the "Elert":
Dear Downtown Seattle Elert recipients,
Attached are photos of a suspect that MID downtown ambassadors have witnessed engaging in aggressive panhandling and a street scam over the last couple weeks. He usually bumps into a victim so the suspect is caused to drop his belongings (usually a bag with a bottle in it that breaks) and then he demands money.
At this point, we've had no willing "victims" to make a complaint to 911. SPD officers field interviewed him on Tuesday (3/24/04) and he gave the name of Robert R. Brown, and he claimed to be a resident of the Glen Hotel (which he is not) and MID ambassadors have awakened him in the morning on the Pine Street side of the Downtown Nordstrom.
He's approximately 5'10, thin/medium build, black male, appears to be in his upper 40's.
Please share this information with others as appropriate and call 911 if he is witnessed committing a crime.
I encourage you to sign up for the Elerts yourself. You've got to love the cop in the second picture, with a special pose just for the ladies:
