She was so startled by the fact that I picked up my phone (and that I knew who was calling, thanks to Caller ID on my cellphone, which I'm sure I've explained to her dozens of times) that she forgot why she was calling in the first place. She said, "It's like I'm in the 'hereafter'... I can't remember what I'm HERE AFTER."
This reminded me of not so long ago, when she was complaining about a lunch companion who talked too much: "She's a nice lady, but I swear, someone must have shot her in the arm with a phonograph needle!" Which also made me think of "Wherrrrre oh wherrrre, are you toNIGHT... and why did you LEAVE me HERE all aLOOOOOOONE?" Ah, Hee-Haw. And my grandmother. I hope you're both somehow around forever. (Yeah, yeah, I know, I know.)
