Really excellent two-part interview. I've heard McCain supporters on the radio say stuff like, literally, "I'm afraid of Obama because he's going to take away our freedoms and turn America into a socialist government." That is of course bullshit, a perspective fueled by GOP messaging and advertising, and if you're a decent, open-minded American you can't possibly listen to this really bright, conscientious guy talk for 15-odd minutes and come away with that same view:

The younger guy at Fero's was telling me about this book. It sounds really cool, esp. when he talks about the "Chinese master sauce," which is apparently a cooking sauce that they just keep reusing again and again, with all kinds of meat, just skimming the top off every time and saving the rest. I think "Chinese master sauce" means there are no true vegetarian options at most Chinese restaurants. Ha.

This is rich, a fund-raising e-mail from John Murtha. Uh, the right-wing attack machine? Maybe you just shouldn't have just made your race competitive by calling your constituents racists (and I'm sure it doesn't help that you've been borderline crooked for much of your career, all the way back to Abscam).

Dear Friends,

After decades of fighting for this country and our troops, I am up against the right-wing attack machine again.

Because of my work to end the Iraq war, they have thrown hundreds of thousands of dollars behind my opponent, who lives in Virginia with his family, not in my district in Pennsylvania. Now, I am suddenly being outspent 3 to 1.

They are up to the same old tricks, "swiftboating" me again as they did two years ago. So I am asking people who have stood with me on Iraq to stand with me again to stop them in their tracks.

I'm happy we don't need John Murtha in the Democratic party any more.
