So a new poll says that "President Obama's ability to shape the debate on health care appears to be eroding." Here's what I don't get about these polls: I heard a guy on NPR talking about he didn't like Obama's health care plan because it would favor minorities too much, based on what he's heard "on the news." (Of course, he had a Southern accent.) WTF?
There are so many things wrong with that, the least of which is that Obama has pointedly stayed out of pushing a specific plan—i.e., there is no "Obama plan," let alone some crazy-racist delusional plan—and instead he's letting Congress hash out the specifics (which may have been a mistake).
So who are these people getting polled and WTF, specifically, are they reacting or even referring to? I feel like I've been following the process reasonably closely, and I couldn't necessarily tell you which competing faction or proposal is in the lead on a given day.
Which would be the hottest day on record ever. If you're not an office chump and would like to partake of some air-conditioning, you're welcome to come by this afternoon—although I will be taking Silas to his first M's game for a little while, until he starts to show signs of combustion. I will start killing the planet... I mean, running the A/C, after lunch I'm guessing.
[update: we've already broken the record for highest minimum temp....]
An artist's interpretation of Seattle, as it will appear later today.
So says one of the main experts responsible for its adoption in 1984, and he calls it "the single most regrettable decision" of his career:
"Legal Age 21 has not worked," Chafetz said in the piece. "To be sure, drunk driving fatalities are lower now than they were in 1982. But they are lower in all age groups. And they have declined just as much in Canada, where the age is 18 or 19, as they have in the United States." Chafetz said the law instead has resulted in "collateral, off-road damage" such as binge drinking that occurs in underage youth and crimes like date rape, assaults and property damage.(via the Slog)
