This is like a Journey-to-the-Center-of-the-Earth vehicle (the "SPIDER") that's currently out in front of my building on First Avenue:
They're doing "geotechnical" test drilling, in preparation for the bored tunnel that will (almost assuredly) replace the viaduct:
When this photo was taken, they had reached 82 feet. The test holes are supposed to go down between 150 and 250 feet deep.
